Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hmm. Your experience is nothing like mine. What system are you using?

For me (and I only use Apple equipment so I have no idea how Android or other
touch devices respond), the iPad Pro in particular is every bit as responsive
as any mouse and/or trackpad desktop computer. As a matter of fact, it's
actually more responsive in many situations with better finger/touch/pointing
accuracy, etc. It's so good in fact that when I'm working on one of the MacBook
laptops I often touch the screen to affect something and wonder why it didn't
respond until I realize that I'm on a different machine/OS, etc.

I touch an icon and instantly the app is running and waiting for my input, or
showing me what I wanted to see. If I'm using the soft keyboard, I can type 50
wpm on it ... the keyboard gives a better tactile feel and gives me more screen
real estate to work with. BTW, the keyboard cover adds an eighth of an inch to
the overall thickness of the iPad Pro when closed and about four ounces, that's
it; the machine remains just as portable.

If you are experiencing that kind of poor responsiveness with an Apple iPad,
let me know what model/configuration/iOS version you're using. Also, if you're
on a model with limited storage and limited free space, be sure you don't have
a lot of background-active apps and services running, slowing things down.

What I find is that touchscreen environments are "fragile". With a
keyboard and mouse I tell the computer what I want done whereas with a
touchscreen I plead repeatedly with it to do what I'd like.

I touch an icon. Nothing happens. I touch it again, it maybe jiggles
or flashes briefly. Third time it finally launches the app. Great, now
I want to type a reply in Instagram so I get the virtual keyboard.
Type a few letters, okay. Try to type a P which is near the edge of
the screen -- no go. I try twisting my finger in several different
orientations, on its side, straight down, nothing. Finally I get an
ell or I accidentally enable the microphone.

It's always just an exercise in frustration. Getting the wrong action
is frequent and getting a dangerous action is frequent enough to be
really annoying. I end up deleting email instead of simply closing it
or moving it to another folder. The number of times I have made the
end of my finger sore by angrily stabbing at the screen when some UI
element refuses to react is uncountable.

The Apple screens are way better than Android ones for sure, but they
are all simply annoying and frustrating to use so I always do as
little as possible on them then move my work to a desktop to get done.

If I really wanted to use the iPad on the go, I would get a real
keyboard for it as you suggest. That would help no doubt, at the
expense of making it somewhat less portable.

What sells units is features, unfortunately. Runs counter to my intuition and
logic too. I don't need many features, I like solid incremental improvement on
a sound feature base.

I have the keyboard cover for the iPad Pro. I'm typing this on it now. It's a
very nice keyboard, actually, even the small one on this 9.7 inch model. (I
have a 12.3 inch model as well, but I don't carry it around as much.) I've
written one and a half books on this iPad and put together presentations, a few
slide shows, a few spreadsheets, etc etc. I've also created videos and
integrated music, talk-over narration, etc. With a good drawing app and a
stylus, I can draw or work the screen to whatever resolution you might want
(although I'm a pretty horrible sketch artist according to my sketch artist
friends...). So I can't really agree with your analogy of 'wearing boxing
gloves' or 'doing anything creative' being difficult. It's pretty easy as a
matter of fact.

Well crafted apps and good peripherals enable a lot. I wouldn't discount them.
Crappy apps and just a touchscreen aren't entirely adequate for everything; a
modern computer without a good mouse or touch pad, a good keyboard, etc, is
pretty useless too.

I'm not "feature driven" either; I hardly use any of that stuff either
(although I do use the macOS Messages app quite a bit).

Most of the work in Sierra is actually OS infrastructure that makes it perform
better on the same hardware I was running El Capitan on, from what I see and
what my use of it shows. That's what makes it worth more to me. Plus the
continuing, improvements in coordination of macOS with my phone and tablet
usage.

Thanks for that info, Dave. I was afraid of something like the Java
installer becoming a problem.

I've been teetering on the brink of getting CC for a year now, but I
may continue holding out for a while more. Sierra is the very first
Mac OS X version that completely disinterests me, and if I simply
avoid upgrading to it then I can also avoid CC for a while longer.

Sierra features: I don't need or want Siri. I already talk to my pets
too much and I'm not about to start talking to my computer as well.
Besides, I really dislike input devices that include a huge amount of
randomness like touch screens and voice recognition. Keyboards and
mice positively do what you direct them to do.

As I run down the remaining checkbox items on the features list there
isn't a compelling thing there. Most of the features require either an
Apple Watch or an iPhone to be useful and I have neither. Many
features are just iOS influences. iCloud figures large in there --
don't need it. Photos app? Useless. Messages? Don't use. Float video
over my desktop while I work? Pxzt! Who thinks that's a good idea?

I'll end up with Lightroom as well, which will be fun after all these years of
Bridge.

Cheers,
Dave

I use an older Lightroom, 4.4. Also older Photoshop CS5 (12.0.4).

Thanks!

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-17 Thread David Mann
You're in a similar situation to me as I also have CS5. I've been holding off
updating to Sierra but I did a search today and found that CS5 is not
officially tested/supported on Sierra. It seems lots of people are having
trouble with crashes and printing problems. Some people couldn't even get it
to run as it required a legacy Java dependency which doesn't have an installer
available for Sierra.

I'm currently thinking about going to CC now. I'm reluctant but I knew it was
inevitable. Adobe doesn't offer payment in NZD and the AUD exchange rate is
pretty good right now, so I might go for a 12-month subscription. It does
puzzle me that buying 12 months offers no discount over 12x 1-month payments.

iOS10.0.2, OS 10.11.7, LR 6.7 (Camera RAW 9.7), Apple Watch 3.0

I have seen no issues with upgrades the last few cycles.
I am disturbed by UI design changes in iOS10 and in the Watch 3.0. And I don’t
like the Adobe subscription model. But I have seen no compatibility issues on
my way to this setup.

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-17 Thread Paul Stenquist
I haven’t had any problems with PhotoShop CS6 or Bridge on Sierra 10.12 and my
late 2015 iMac 27 5K. However, Apple’s own Mail software has been problematic.
Others have reported this as well. When first started under Sierra, it works
fine but when clicking back to Mail list after running other software it
freezes and I have to quit Mail and restar itt. I should point out that I run
three different mailboxes, including comcast.com, through Apple Mail, so that
may be part of the problem. The computer also crashes and restarts at times
when In sleep mode. Everything else seems to be okay. My system is somewhat
extreme with 6 external hard drives currently running and a second 27-inch
monitor. I should have waited to upgrade, but I always get a kick out of
exploring new tech.

The addition of Siri is somewhat useful, although you have to click her open,
so if you’re asking her to start an app, you might as well just start the app
yourself. I do ask her to read my schedule. That’s useful.

Hoping the first upgrade fixes the Mail and Sleep problems.

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

I can't speak to LR4.4, that's too old: I haven't run anything less than 5.x or
6.x for over a year, certainly never on anything older than macOS 10.11 El
Capitan. I've been running Sierra through various alpha/beta iterations with
PSCS5.1 and LR6.x for the past 9 months. The only problems I've noted (with
both) are some issues with color managed printing profiles, but with LR6.4-6.6
this happened even on macOS 10.11 El Capitan. LR6.7 seems to have addressed
these now, but I haven't done extensive testing yet.

Otherwise, all of the apps I use in my image processing workflow (Lightroom,
Flare, occasionally Photoshop) along with some of the display/word
processing/etc apps I use have either worked flawlessly or have been updated
for Sierra already.

I have an existing installation of the last ever version of Aperture on one of
my systems and it's still working well with Sierra.

I understand that Capture One prior to version 9.3 has had some issues that
have now been taken care of, but it's been a while since I tested C1.
