Dave,

I've never been turned away from the "truck lanes" at any truck stop. I have
found that the truck nozzles just barely fit into the baffle plate in my fill
pipe. The tip of the nozzle has an upset ring about 1/4" from the end that
stops the nozzle from entering any further than said 1/4 inch. Kind of a PITA
to stand there holding that nozzle and big hose, and easier to wash the
trousers with fuel oil if you get inattentive for a moment. I like to head for
Flying J truck stops when available since most have "RV" lanes with sufficient
clearance, pumps on both sides of the aisle, and also dump and fresh water fill
facilities all together. I've heard they have a membership card that's good
for another penny off their usually lowest prices as well. Check out their
website for locations and current prices.

I have seen the name of the finish on Airstreams called "Plasticoat"
and "Clear Coat". As I have heard folks discuss the removing of this
finish, most recently using Ammonia, and the lack of success verus the
success others, it begs the question, are these actually two different
compounds or are they the same product just using different names at
different time periods.?

If anyone still is using the original split rims of the 1950's and needs
hubcaps, you might want to check this pair out on ebay, as they have the
inside spring clips used on the HADCO and other split rims.

On this topic, which i'm copying to the VAClist -

I was a mere pup of 26 (bought my first AS on my 26th b-day) when i joined
the ranks of Airstreamers. That was a little more than 25 years ago.

The '65 GT had all its original documentation, including the previous
owner's WBCCI membership packet, although the numbers had never been
installed. I never joined, but only because i was in ramble-mode, and not
all that interested in joining anything. My general impression of the sexta-
and septuagenarians who seemed to comprise the majority of fulltimers was
that they were a lot more energetic and interesting to hang out with than
most of my peers.

now that i'm (an astonishingly immature) 51, i find it curiously refreshing
to be referred to as 'that young fella', which almost never happens at the
university, where the more polite undergraduates address me as 'sir'...

i apologize in advance if this might offend anyone in my regional Unit who
might be tuning in, but coincidentally enough, this very evening i was
invited to a Unit brunch this coming Sunday with the folks in that unit...
the first one on a weekend that i can recall, by the way; they ordinarily
occur mid-day during the week. I haven't been to one, yet, so i can't report
on what they're like... they might be a real 'hoot'.
but -
the unit's newsletter reads like a med student's notes from 'grand rounds'.
i fully recognize that there is always a certain amount of 'drift' in a
local unit of any type of group, and the prevailing interests of any group
are pretty much self-selected and maintained. that's just the way these
things seem to work out...

my last correspondence with bill scott had to do with shifting my membership
to the WDCUnit - but i can't seem to find those emails... anyone have the
information for that?
and, BTW, i never did get any kind of 'renewal notice' from the WBCCI...
what's up with that?

I'm not sure what the official policy is, but our Regional Unit sent forms
around a couple of weeks ago and that was followed up by a form from
WBCCI that included a "tear out" wallet card as proof of paid up

share how the curtains are made? I know how to sew - don't need
instructions. Just need to know if they are regular pinch-pleat drapes -
and especially if the bottom is also pinch-pleated before the line is run
through to hold them against the wall. All the pictures I see look as if
this may be the case. Any help would be most appreciated.

They are pinch pleats at both the top and bottom secured to the track by
special hardware that slides in the track. The hardware is available at most
Airstream dealers. You can see the custom drapes made for my 1976 Sovereign
by James Ambruso at http://www.jpadrapes.com/ on my web page at

Patti,

I don't believe that there is a "stop" on your 67 Safari, only a valve for
the black water tank. Both gray and black should drain through the same
drain. Was the leak coming from the drain, or through the skin? If from the
drain I suspect that it was only water that was in the drain traps emptying
out as you first moved the trailer. If it was leaking through the skin, then
you definitely have something that needs to be fixed.

Greetings,
We would like to know what sort of horse we need to get to pull our
cart. We are in the process of deciding which model airstream to buy,
the list right now is 66-69 caravels or 60's globetrotter, or the like.
We would like to be "summer full timers", our concern is that once
loaded with our stuff, our present car (a mid size Olds wagon) will not
be a realistic tow vehicle, especially through the rockies etc... Are
load levelers necessary?

So what are people using to tow these older models which the ads show
being towed by a bicycle??? I am certainly not in that kind of shape!

Thanks for your input.

Subject: Curtains

Lisa,

The curtains have a SINGLE pleat at the top AND bottom. There is no pinch
and tacking in the middle of the pleat. The effect is a "T" cross section
if you were looking down from the top. The top of the T would be the span
(width) of the drape and the stem of the T would be the double thick fabric
of the pleat. the vertical stitching to make the pleat would be at the
intersection of the stem of the T and the top. The depth of the pleat is
approximately one inch.

The whole idea is to give the look of a pleated drapery without the bulk of
an old fashioned (traditional) pinch pleat which used a panel approximately
double the spanned width of the finished drape.

Your best bet would be to get hold of an old drape. Also, you will probably
have to replace the elastic which is used to attach the slide to the drape
at both the top and the bottom.

James Ambruso does a really fine job making replacement drapes and includes
a Millium like(aluminum insulated, sun resistant) lining and new hardware
and elastic. In my opinion, you should seriously consider buying the
finished product.

My wife has made many drapes for our home, and uses an industrial sewing
machine. For our Airstream drapes, we are going to have Mr. Ambruso do the
work, and use the time for some other activities.

Good luck in whatever route you decide to take.

Even with a Caravel pulled by a half ton truck, load equalizers are
handy to keep the headlights down out of the trees.

I'd think a summer of a couple in a Caravel would prove too close. A
week maybe. Its just fine for me and an occasional guest.

The model towed by the bicycle was a Bambi, smaller yet, the airport
runway very level and its rarely repeated.

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm replacing the damaged toilet in our ' 68 =
Tradewind. To order the correct part to mount the replacement toilet, I =
need to know if the toilet flange (metal part above the floor) is =
screwed into the holding tank or if it's just a slip fit inside the top =
of the black water tank. Hopefully somebody will know how the flange and =
tank are connected. We are trying to be ready in time for the Top of =
Georgia vintage rally in a couple of weeks and it would be real =
convenient to have bathroom facilities. ;-)

Many thanks,=20

Brad, try www.metalsupermarkets.com. They have outlets all over the place.
Another source is www.airpartsinc.com/alumsheet.htm. They have aluminum in
rolls of any length which should simplify shipping if they are not local.

Eventually, I will be replacing the belly skin on my Tradewind.

Subject: How to get rid of the HTML gobbledeggok

I notice a lot of people send their messages in HTML. I used to also, it
results in your message having a whole lot of nonsense right after your
message. I figured out to stop this, just go to" tools" at the top of your
email program, then go to "options" then "send" then change from HTML to
"plaintext". I have Outlook Express, so other email programs might be a bit
different. I hope this helps someone else out, I love reading the VAC list
but all that HTML can be very frustrating when you have to scroll down
through it to get to the English part to read about Airstreams !

Not to mention that plain text messages take a lot less time to sent and
receive.
