I think, sadly, you've hit the nail on the head here.  You had a valid 
problem - not being able to install the distro.  This is a basic issue - 
without installs, you can't have users - so I have no doubt people would have 
wanted to work through this with you.

I just wonder how many new users don't post because their interpretation of 
the "level" of posts is skewed by Ralf's spiels (I'm not saying this applies 
to you).  "Gee - look at all the detail - this guy must be a wizz with Linux.  
I'm not at that level - I'd better not post, or they'll think I'm a moron."

The irony is that, even though you are "sometimes overwhelmed by the details", 
the vast majority of this stuff is irrelevant to issues that most new users 
will face.  Sure, you can look at Ralf's stuff and think, "Good old Ralf, 
there he is, chuntering along as usual - nice to think there are people like 
that around, lifting up stones."  But my view is that this same stuff is 
antithetical to turning lurkers into users, and that is not good for the 
distro.
