I think the real answer to your question is that when you save an attachment or scan a document, if you save it to your desktop, you'll know where it is when you are done.
Thats it. Anything placed on the desktop is saved to the HD. If you always use your MY DOCUMENTS folder for letters, photos, and such, you can always save your documents there instead. Just as long as you remember that you saved them there. Putting things on the desktop just makes it easier to find and open. Until your desktop gets cluttered with so many icons. I save a lot of things to my desktop if i'm only going to use it once. I'll download a program to install to the desktop, run it and then throw it in the recycle bin. That way I don't have to navigate folders to run the program after downloading it.
