Hi Louise Most if not all the usual causes have been suggested both here and on other Lists and if you have tried them all you would seem to be running out of options and it may be a hardware problem somewhere. You have a new hard drive which I assume your XP OS was installed on so it should be back to it's original speed. I don't have your original email but I assume you have sufficient RAM to run XP, 512 mb is the optimum.
Martha has a page on slow computers: http://www.marthas-web.com/slowcomputer.htm If you have updated and run your Anti Virus program, plus Spybot and Adaware in safe mode and prior to turning off system restore there is not much more I personally can think of except perhaps running Hijack This and posting the resulting log to the Hijack This site for analysis. If you have done all of the foregoing the chances are certainly in favour of ruling out Malware, viruses & worms etc. As far as buying a new pc is concerned, I have mine built by a local company to my personal specification. I recently purchased an Acer laptop/ notebook very cheaply and I have been very impressed with it apart from being a bit slow to boot up. I also set up a new Dell Dimension laptop recently and was impressed with that also. One neat idea in favour of Acer is that they partitioned the hd so that you can save all your personal data to drive E and if you ever need to use the restoration disks they only restore drive C to the factory settings and leave your personal data on drive E intact. In fact I wonder if I would ever purchase a conventional tower, monitor and keyboard computer again because laptops take up much less space and you can use them anywhere in the house using a wireless router and wireless printing. Did that. And since I am only online when using that computer, I cannot verify that it is slow when not online. But I will check on that after work today. I took all my "regular" programs off that computer, hoping somehow that would help so I will have to reinstall something and check that. > You may also try hovering your mouse over the > connection icon to check your connection speed; My connection speed is 31-41 kbs and that IS all I am going to get here. With the older computer, it was worse! > install a new modem. The existing modem may be faulty or have been >damaged or disturbed when the new hd was installed ... it does happen. I forgot to mention that this is an external modem. And the first one was faulty and this is a second one. At this point, can malware or worms be ruled out? Where is the best place to buy another computer? Louise --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean.
