It seems doubtful that the problem is the modem itself. You mentioned XP, 
did you install it. You may need to update the drivers for XP. This will 
require the make and model of the modem. To get that go to Accessories, 
System Tools, System Information, then choose modem. This should give you 
what you need to find the modem website dna get drivers for your modem.

Yes, I had to buy Partition Magic, but with all my computers it was a 
worthwhile investement.
It will partition drives witout destroying data, unlike fdisk.

Not if you have a partitioning program.

But notebooks are more costly for the same performance than a desktop.

That's not a bad idea, if you can't find drivers for the old one. With 
modems as cheap as they are now however it might just be worht buyhing a new 
one to avoid having to bother looking for drivers. The new one will have 
them already.
