First off, you should never just pull the plug, even when there is an error.
All you do is complicate things. Using the off button is not the standard
way of shutting down either but it is less catastrophic then pulling the
plug.

You said that the modem did not seem to need drivers, did you get any
drivers, did you try to install them. That is what I would do first.
