My error, he did use the off button before unplugging.

I can appreciate that advice, Jim, but I cannot get past the Dell
splash screen. Therefore, I cannot install.
I think what I am going to do next (tomorrow, I think) is remove the
internal modem and hope I haven't screwed things up too badly.
