It seems to me like this could be a hardware problem. My first thought was 
to run chkdsk and defrag, except that they would work on the NTFS file 
system. So the only other solution that comes to mind is to reinstall the OS 
or run your rescue disk(s). The OS install portion will probably do a 
chkdsk, which checks for damaged sectors before installing. I would choose 
the reformat option. If you have un backed up data on the drive you could 
run the repair option if offered.
