My understanding is that XP will operate with 256 Meg. My daugherer user her
machine with only 128 meg for a long time, did internet, etc. She just
didn't know that things should take so long. Mainly I was saying that you
don't need a Gig of ram unless you just want that much. I have machines with
a Gig and with 512 Meg and I can see no difference. I'm still not convinced
that XP manages ram very well. And of course sometimes the balance between
ram and virtual memory should be fine tuned. I just don't know what the
balance should be. I think that just bumping ram up to a Gig would only make
a difference if someone fine tuned the virtual ram. I could be wrong of
course. And it may also depend on the demand you make on the ram. I tinker
all the time with my computers but I do not do video editing, high end
gaming or other things that demand a lot of ram.
