Shelley, Say you want to buy a brand new computer from BestBuy that
costs $1,200. BestBuy advertises rebates worth $400 that, would knock
the price of the computer down to $800. The catch in the rebates is,
you would probably have to sign up for some online service like AOL,
Compuserve, Prodigy, etc.; You would also probably be forced to sign up
for an unneeded and useless, warranty service. So, In the end, the $400
worth of rebates, is no rebate at all. They hope you will forget that,
you signed up for all that stuff, so, you will just be owing them, more
$. Beware of the rebate tactic.
