John,
It appears there is something wrong with Windows itself.  Have you tried the 
printer on a different computer?  If it works on another computer, then 
something is Windows is messed up.  If the printer does not work on another 
computer, then maybe the printer is having a problem.

If it not the printer, then finding the problem is Windows may take some time.  
It also could be a conflict with some of the programs installed on your 
computer.  Consider the first time the problem appeared and think about any 
programs that were installed just prior to that or any changes that were made.

The other issue could be with the built-in Windows driver versus the HP 
software.  Have you gone to HP's site and followed their diagnostic 
instructions??  I've found this works when "stumbling around" on my own doesn't.
