Speed is the usual advantage I hear for Windows, which often seems to be true. Anyone have benchmarks that demonstrate how well 4D 2004.2 performs on mac versus win?
I seem to remember there was a thread on the iNUG recently about 4D 2004.2/Tiger performance vs. Windows.
One thing missed by many in the speed/price equation: total cost of ownership. If a Windows server is 10% faster than a Mac OS X server, but requires 400% more time to administer/keep running, the small initial cost savings and speed advantage will be dwarfed by the actual cost of ownership.
For example, I'm looking at a TCO report here that compares Windows vs. Linux costs. To me the most telling cost is that Linux required about $1600 per year per server in salary to administer a Linux server, vs. $6800 per year per server for a Windows server. I can only speculate that the cost per year for Mac OS X would be _lower_ than the Linux figure.
That's an additional cost of over $5000 per year, and MUST be included as part of the cost of the server. So even if a Windows server is $500 less than a Mac server, after 5 weeks that cost advantage is gone, and from then on a Mac server is drastically cheaper to own. This is not even taking into the account the cost of setup. From studies and anecdotal evidence, the small price difference between Windows and Mac servers is typically erased by the time the relative labor cost of installation and configuration is factored in.
Just something to thing about.
