Oh dear, I really think that you are missing the point. There are
currently 5184 members, so this is a huge group, but it seems there
is only a hardcore of people that regularly post, which means most of
the other people are happy to read the posts and are probably guided
by the opinions of the regulars. I know I have gleaned some great
knowledge, and I like to think that an opinion posted is one that can
be trusted.

That's why I believe that the `crap' comment was so wrong. If I was
considering buying a camera, then that would have definitely put me
off that make, precisely because I have grown to value the opinion of
the group.

Again, for the money I believe the Canon offers superb value, and is
better than the Sony equivalents in terms of LCD sharpness, better
low light capability and has the iris ring on the barrel, which is
much better for anyone used to pro lenses. Colours are extremely
natural, auto white is spot on 98% of the time, it is not
uncomfortable to handle over prolonged shoots, the battery life is
brilliant and the hi-def pictures are superb.

It is not a proper `pro' camera, but is not marketed as such. HDV
uses massive compression to get a Hi-Def picture on a DV tape, and as
such it is common sense to anyone with a basic knowledge of video
recording that you should always go for the tape that has been
designed for the purpose. Any scrimping on that is just asking for
trouble. That's held true of VHS, S-VHS, and all tape based formats.
And tape prices are so cheap (relative to what they used to be) that
saving a couple of pounds on a once in a lifetime recording (which
most filming is) is utter madness. We currently use a PD150 as a live
relay camera and sometimes mix it in an SD signal with the Canon, and
the picture quality on the Canon is far superior, even in SD.

I was just trying to stress the importance of balanced opinions,
because what we write here is probably listened to and acted on by a
lot of people, and a bad experience, if posted as a bad experience,
can provide invaluable insight, but to post and write something off
as `crap' without any justification is ignorant and dangerous, and as
I said, I had hoped the group was better than that.

Anyway, if Rieni is the moderator this could be my last post, so I
stand by my views and thank everyone who has contributed valuable
justified insights over the years, both good and bad!
