Richard Actually, there are two issues. One is, as you state, stop the subscription and even older software might stop working. But another issue is higher cost: when one "purchases" a product (say CS6), the total cost of ownership (TCO) can be lowered by amortizing the purchase price over a longer time (e.g., skipping upgrades) whereas with a subscription the TCO uncontrollably increases over a longer period of time.
Note there are no contracts offering a price break with longer periods (as there are with magazine subscriptions). And the attempt to justify a subscription by saying the user gets frequent updates is a vacuous argument at best, when in fact the main reason for a subscription seems to be to impose a price increase upon the user.
