Finally got one of the new Cambium units in for testing. It is similar to my
GigE-SS and CAT6-SS in most parameters. Insertion Loss, NEXT etc. But there
is a major difference in Return Loss.
Return Loss measures how much signal bounces back from the far end. On 100
Mbps Ethernet circuits it doesn’t matter because each pair is simplex.
But with GigE circuits each pair is duplex and any reflected energy can combine
with the desired signal coming from the far end and cause errors.

Pairs Cambium MTC
1/2 10.3(db) 30.2
3/6 11.6 28.9
4/5 10.5 26.3
7/8 10.0 25.9

Can only guess at the motivations, but this is only a test they did in their
controlled lab, we haven’t seen this as a problem with that ISP in the
lightning season in the field reported to us, and we of course lab test at much
higher kV levels than the ones they claim generally, the ISP did their own
testing as well with specific radios. So as Chuck said, I’d consider the source.

But why go out of the way to do all this work if it doesn't cause problems?
They're not making enough sales on their own surge suppressor, which I didn't
even know exists...

Agree Chuck, and similar anonymous 3rd parties also confirm their largest

Interesting why nothing was said by the “3rd party” about interoperability
with other radios as it seems rather isolated to a few radio models that
customer happily uses it with…

  Well...

Consider the source. They have an ethernet problem. Even with no surge
suppressor they have frame check and CRC errors. Most semiconductor based
surge suppressors aggrivate that problem.

  Gas discharge tube products don’t.

While I will agree that they are a bit slower, to say they do not protect the
product is disingenuous at best and totally false at worst.

But the users will be the true test.

How does this apply to yours Chuck?
