The cabin of the aircraft is pressured using bleed air from the engines and
is part of the air conditioning systems. Also I think a factor in what you
said about less ear popping now then back then is newer aircraft like the
787 will keep an airpress equivalent to 6000 ft where older aircraft would
hold press equivalent to 8000ft.
