I would say that both trends fit in well with the "crisis", people giving up dreams while at the same time aiming for career consolidation and advancement. That their crisis started before 2008 is, I think, indicative of western decadence that caused the financial crisis, rather than the reverse. That singularity is not doing so great cannot be explained the same way, people should have been attracted to the utopias and dystopias there. Perhaps it is already too mainstream to engage people, or too speculative, or not speculative enough. Given that immortality is one of the mainstays, I have no idea to what extremes you need to go! Perhaps we are all much more banal than desperate to bother with the future.
