Then there must be a government-industry conspiracy to suppress
organic farming. Otherwise, I see no reason why farmers wouldn't want
to make food the least expensive way possible, especially if they can
sell it at a higher price.

GMO food is copy-protected by their manufacturers to enforce their
patent rights. Technically, this is not necessary, just like copy
protection on software is independent of the software's function. I
believe that once genetic engineering becomes cheap, that copy
protection will go away as it has in software.
