Hi all
As an aging radiographer my experience tells me that if you are good at
your
job, you will always be respected by your medical colleagues.
Your skills in producing quality examinations, in communicating with
patients and medical colleagues, and in acting in a professional, caring
manner will always be valued by those around you.
There will always be some who want to put you down as 'just a
radiographer' - but they will do the same to other professions, their own
colleagues and probably their own superiors.
People respect the deed - not the title, and administrators tend to look
at
the position description rather than the position title in determining
status.
If you think you need a better label to demonstrate your contribution,
then
perhaps you need to examine personally why that is.
If a title can be found that fully encompasses the needs and aspirations
of
all groups interested in this question, then all well and good - but let's
not get too precious about it.
Some contributors have talked about changing our status in the medical
community, but I have not yet seen anyone offer a considered opinion
of what
the current status is, where and why it is deficient, or how and why they
think it needs to be improved. What are you really trying to achieve?
I guess an analogy can be made with the republic/constitutional
monarchy
debate. If a change to a republic is achieved, will there be any real
change
to the way we perceive ourselves, or in the way other countries
perceive
Australia? I think not.
If Australia spent 50% of its GDP on oversea aid, and made large
contributions to the promotion of world peace, medical research and
conservation, the entire world would stand and cheer - but you don't
need a
name change to do that.
