Saffron from an Indian grocer is quite reasonable. About a dozen years ago I gave it as Christmas presents. Locally it comes from Spain. In De Troit the Indian grocers had it from Kasmir/Cashmere. The grocer that always had it went out of business after two new Indian grocers opened on the same street. I don't know the current price. The date is not the expiration, but the harvest. The current crop is 2010.
Ground Turmeric, Curcuma longa, will give the same color. It costs around $5 for 14 ounces. Mango Ginger, Curcuma amada, has a beautiful flower. We don't get enough sun here. Curcuma amada rhizomes are about $4 per pound. Most people eat them. -- Larry Wallace Cincinnati
