Most of the comments I see on my main app are positive 4 or 5 stars,
but then once in a while some goofy person who either didn't
understand the app uses geolocation and has both their wireless
networks and GPS shutoff gives me a one star with "didn't work,
couldn't find location." They never did read the help text that comes
up the first time they run the app, never contacted me and just gave
up. I find this curious but not unexpected. The few who do write me
about this problem are always pleasantly surprised when I tell them to
turn on the service and everything works as expected.

The Android users are coming around, they used to be a lot more gruff
and grumbly but now are at least more constructive. I think it's a
matter of device too. The average G1 user is more likely to give a one
star and the average Droid user a five star. I'm guessing the early
adopters tend to be more critical and the late ones give the benefit
of the doubt. Don't ask me why, just appears to be the case.

My app "Radar Now!" has over 2500 ratings and an average of 4.3+ so at
least most people are positive about it.

As for getting users to rate the app, I find about 1% take the trouble
to do so. That's a very low number to me. I ask in the help text for
users to rate the app, many write to me and ask me how they rate apps.
Again, curious but not unexpected.
