According to this article - http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1007671- reviews have a strong influence on online purchases for 71% of respondents. Getting a working review system in place appears critical to generating sales.
For sites like Amazon, 5-star ratings work pretty well because you get people who really put time into reviewing the items. It doesn't seem to me that the star rating system works well in the mobile space because people put no time into doing a critical review (small screen-sizes, low-priced items). But I also see the same problem of useless comments and ratings on youtube, so the problem extends to general media.
