OK, after asking the question about what may have killed my app (with the consensus leaning toward a change in how apps are sorted), something changed again. This time it was probably due to a change I made. After two straight weeks of declining downloads (down originally from around 2000 new users/day to 150-300 new users/day), I heard from a local developer that adding translations to your app descriptions can boost their downloads by 20% or so, so I tried it to see what would happen. Keep in mind that my "marketing plan" is to get a publisher, and it looks like I'll be signing with one soon (contract just got back from the attorneys and I have an appointment tomorrow to go in and sign it), so I've not really been pushing my app at all recently. So far my app downloads are up by...wait for it...1300%. One week after the translations were added. And they're still trending upwards. So did the extra translations really cause this? Most of the downloads are in non-English-speaking countries, so maybe so. WHY the huge boost, I'm not sure -- maybe because the other guys were doing a lot better to begin with, but my neglected game was performing way under the level it should have been at? In any event, if your app can be used internationally, adding a bad Google Translation of its description is better than nothing.
