Per,
in a bilingual dictionary you can see a paradigm as a smaller dictionary
in which the translation of certain parts of words is given. If there
are regularities, you can put them in a paradigm.

Not that you have to use it, but here is an example. Imagine the
following (made up) list of correspondences between Spanish and
Portuguese (I use a shorthand notation to avoid XML clutter):

(nacional.adj:nacional.adj);
(nacionalizar.v:nacionalisar.v);
(nación.n.f:nação.n.f);
(transicional.adj:transicional.adj);
(transicionalizar.v:transicionalisar.v);
(transición.n.f:transição.n.f)
(institucional.adj:instituicional.adj);
(institucionalizar.v:instituicionalisar.v);
(institución.n.f:instituição.n.f);
etc.

You could write a paradigm p1 containing

(cional.adj:cional.adj);
(cionalizar.v:cionalisar.v);
(ción.n.f:ção.n.f)

And then rewrite the above list as

(na:na)[p1];
(transi:transi)[p1];
(institu:institui)[p1];

This could be a way of dealing with e.g. derivational morphology where
it is extremely regular.
