EXACTLY! And that is it's PLUS. It's the students' ideas and words that
count--especially for those learning to write. Not spending 40 minutes piddling
with font types, colors, spacing, graphics, modifying letterheads, etc. The
AppleWorks spellchecker are excellent in the classroom, giving the students the
opportunity to see many words at a glance, and the chance to go looking for
more. Then, there's the thesaurus and grammar checker.
Personally, I'd like students to craft their writing, to self-edit, and prove
their ability to have their own ideas. iMovie may be great, but parents
don't (yet) send their children to school to all become film producers, but they
do want them all to be able to read, write, and count past six.

I saw the high school students' PowerPoint presentations a couple of summers
ago and it was depressing plus. Lots of graphics, tunes, and special
effects--but substance? A couple of seemingly plagiarized quotes and that was about
it. Presentation, presentation, presentation, but very little synthesis of
their own ideas.

Someone wrote years ago that if Shakespeare were alive today, he'd be working
for the film industry, and he would have been reduced to "CUT TO SUNRISE."
