Yeah, and I would recommend to read a mail till the end before
replying to it, alter Schwede! ;-)))

I was refering to the difference between the HMA and the UMB's in this
paragraph, trying to clarify the term "high memory" that Clarence
and others were using in different meanings.

Yes, in german translation UMB's are called "hoher Speicherbereich"
and the HMA is ridiculously translated as "oberer Speicherbereich".
Confusion continues when the differences between XMS and EMS memory
are described, but that would lead too far now...

But you're right: DOS=HIGH,UMB (or two separate lines with the same
effect) is the standard line in config.sys, because it 1. loads a good
part of MS-DOS into the HMA (= HIGH) and 2. lets MS-DOS control the
UMB's that must have been enabled to be accessed with EMM386.EXE in
the first place (= UMB). If this line (or second item on the line)
is missing and only DOS=HIGH is stated in config.sys, it will not be
possible to load anything "high". The same is true, if there's no line
in config.sys that would load EMM386.EXE during the boot sequence with
either the /noems or /ram option.

Right, for the more conservative kind... ;-) BUT: "help.exe" even
has the ability to search through the whole help-file with any given
search term - like "noumb", for example, and stop at the right screens.
Just in case one doesn't exactly know what he's looking for... ;-)
