You misunderstand some things !
Soupgate is a fido <-> internet gateway, so there is not much sense in
using it without fido software.
You don't have to be member of fidonet, but you have to have a program,
that can use fidostype .pkt files.

I use it, because I have never found a more convenient editor than fido
golded !

your ISP has not much to do with it ...

TM> I never heard of spoon for sending email or news messages.
it's part of soupgate.
It sends and reveives SOUP packets (like UKA_PPP), and those packets are
converted to fido .pkt files by soupgate.
spoon is available for win32/linux/OS/2

but IMHO this is getting FAR OT, so next mail in private please.

May I ask what the itent is in using 2 unixish OSes ???
Choose EITHER linux OR *BSD !

TM> I am not willing to pay the "Microsoft tax" for Windows preinstalled!
I neither !!
I never said that it was preinstalled !!!
I wrote that this was a 'special offer' for technical university students,
because slobodan wants to get them away from linux.
I bought win98 before the new computer because it costed virtually nothing.
(65 ATS compared to over 1500 ATS in the stores.)
I also bought win2k because it costed 95 ATS compared to 5500 ATS in
stores.
(I kg bread costs ca. 25 ATS)

But slobodan did not manage to get me away from linux.
(my old computer runs redhat 7 all 24/7 as a small server, and I also boot
into mandrake on the new computer.)

TM> Quote from an ad by MS in PC World: "NSTL test results show that

TM> MS admits Win98 is not up to strength!
sure ...
but M$ tests also show that win2k is not suitable as a game machine.
This is the reason why M$ did release Win Millenium !

And test sure also show that linux is 20 times more reliable than win2k pro
...

TM> What can DOS do with an ocean of RAM? How much RAM can DOS handle?
depends on the memory manager ... IMHO virtually not bounded.
(as much as there is, with the right memory manager)

But 'normal' DOS programs are still limited to 640K, and can use the
aditional RAM only with nasty tricks (copying it into a small window in
lower mem ...) this is sloooooow

Think of it ... DOS was made for the 80086 ....
it was already outdated with 80286 which offered a limited protected mode
and DIRECT (without nasty and slow tricks) support for 16 MB RAM !

And DOS Extenders eliminate DOS !!
(eg they switch in protected mode, where there is no DOS !!
if they need to issue a DOS function call, than they have to switch back to
real mode, make the call, and switch back to protected mode ....
SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWW)
Why not use an OS that can utilize features of 80286+ ??

PS: Protected mode Arachne would still br MUCH better than current DOS
arachne ... she could use the flat memory (no need for xswap), could use
virtual memory if necessary (through DPMI provider), .....
