What paring did you do?  Did you stop unnecessary services?
Did you have a KDE or Gnome desktop?  Which window manager?

I assure you that this will not happen on a 486dx66 with
32meg RAM running BasicLinux and icewm.

Can your monitor do standard VGA?  Then the Linux VGA server
should work.

If you ask me nicely, I'll send you an XF86Config file
pre-configured for generic VGA.  Just copy it over your
non-working XF86Config (probably in /etc) and make sure
your system has the VGA16 server (probably in /usr/X11/bin).
