A compact version of mc is also found at the 
BasicLinux site:

It's compiled for BasicLinux, but should also work 
for Slackware 3.x or any other distro using libc5.

For people without mc, you can get similar functionality
from lynx.  Just enter the following:
-------
lynx .
-------
This will enable you to browse the local filesystem
and view the files (using the arrow keys).
