Monitor is an SVGA ~shrug~ SVGA monitors and SVGA video cards support all the standard VGA modes in addition to some SVGA modes, so the SVGA monitor should work with VGA albeit not to the best of its capabilities. Isn't there a configuration program in Linux to help you detect and configure the video hardware? Look at what video modes you use with Arachne and MS-Windows.
