Cyborg was struggling with Linux....

I hesitate to offer 'advice' on Linux in the presence of so many who
know infintely more than I shall ever do, but I can identify with the
'totally lost' feeling when coming to Linux for the first time - here's
what helped me to find my way around: make sure that 'mc' (Midnight
Commander) is installed. It comes on Slackware and Redhat CDs and can
also be found on the www. It runs at the prompt (type mc) and gives a
good representation of how all the directories are laid out in Linux.
You can investigate each one and the built-in text-viewer allows you to
see what's in each one. VERY handy for investigating all of those
configuration files. It will also copy or move files, create
directories, set links, set privileges, etc., etc. (Bear in mind that
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool DOS man who's always used Xtree.)

Also, I found a book 'Linux in easy steps' ISBN 1-84078-072-X (9
from Staples) which isn't perfect but it does help. I also got 'Running
Linux - 2nd Ed.' published by O'Reilly but I'm very glad that I only
paid a couple of pounds for it at a junk sale.

Hope this helps! Linux is DEFINITELY worth persevering with.

      Gerald.
