That's still unusually fast. VERY,VERY fast.  
Almost exactly the speed on a RAMDISK on *MY* '386. (20MHz)
My HD would take 5-10 minutes without a cache.

AHAH !!!  You must have Smartdrive set to cache writes !
I would never do that again since it has already bitten me twice or so.
I only cache reads so it takes 1 min 5 or so sec on HD even with cache.

As far as I can tell, there seems to be about a factor of two speed
advantage. If 3.31 retains that advantage and gives access to >32Mb
partitions, it would certainly be the optimum way to go for slow boxes.
