I used to have SmartDrive set to cache writes, also according to
some advice I got here on the Arachne list.
Then it bit me ! I lost a heap of very important data files
related to my business when the system crashed while I had heaps of
stuff in memory (whole directories). It took me ages to find and
unerase most of it, but some was lost forever - including the
directories themselves.
I was using FastFlip task swapper, with my word processor switched
out to memory. :(
I lost the whole directory it was logged into, and never got it back.
After that, I disabled caching writes. I will never enable it again.
Do what you have to, but I am very happy to wait those fractions of a
second that disk writes take, knowing that I have reduced the risk of
losing data again.
Regards,
Ron
