I did not mean to suggest it was absolute.  I tend to think in terms of 
my own installation/setup methodology, and our discussion quickly went 
from one topic to another and I neglected to make my answer as broad as 
possible.  I tried to clarify that in a later message.

No, it doesn't *have* to be. But I still recommend it.

As I alluded to in a previous message, there are different ways to 
configure ASSP.  Its my opinion that optimally ASSP should be a proxy 
between your server and the Internet only.  I can think of multiple 
reasons why I would not want my users sending mail through ASSP's SMTP 
port.  But, and I hate to say it, but I don't have time right now to go 
into this further.

If anyone else agrees with me and wants to pick up where I am leaving 
off at this point, great.  Otherwise I probably wont be able to provide 
a detailed answer until next week.  I'm heading out-of-state.
