If someone sends an email and expects a prompt reply and/or action but
doesn't get it - there can be a lot of wasted time there and possibly
wasted money (time is money after all).  If the person received an
auto reply stating that the person was out for whatever reason (sick,
holiday, emergency, lunch) and to please contact blah blah blah, then
the communication chain has not been broken.

Like it or not, many people work this way.  Perhaps your profession
hasn't exposed you to this, but mine has.  I'm not saying I like it,
but its a fact of any peoples lives.
