As I'm sure you are aware, there are any number of reasons that email
can never be completely relied upon as an instantaneous means of
communication. Generally, yes, usually emails will be received within a
few minutes of sending - but not always.

Anyone who conducts business in a manner that doesn't take this fact
into consideration *will* get bit - sooner, or later.

> If the person received an auto reply stating that the person was out
> for whatever reason (sick, holiday, emergency, lunch) and to please
> contact blah blah blah, then the communication chain has not been

And if such an auto-reply gets caught in any one of dozens of spam
filters in use? Or a server is broken somewhere? (I've even seen a case
where the recipient deleted it thinking it was spam, then complained
when they thought they weren't getting it)

Again, it is completely unrealistic to believe that email is a 100%
reliable means of communication 100% of the time, and it is
irresponsible to not correct someone's misconception when you encounter
it (not saying you do).

> Like it or not, many people work this way. Perhaps your profession

Oh, I've been exposed to this misconception more times than I can count,
but I always correct it. No amount of their wishful thinking or wanting
it to be otherwise will change reality.
