As mentioned earlier, the vacation package seems well behaved, I am 
happy with it. Easy enough to install, can be (de-)activated by users 
(for example with a squirrelmail plugin), and it is smart enough to not 
repeatedly respond and to not email mailinglists (I am not sure about 
the latter). I see no point re-inventing the wheel, this utility does as 
much as one could expect, with the least nuisance possible. Auto 
responders always will have some amount of nuisance, but many people 
want them so we have to live with it. As a side note, I wouldn't call an 
auto reply spam, it is not bulk email.
