Imap does support SSL, which is really not the preferred method to use 
encryption, that's TLS. Which imap supports too. At least if the imap 
server is worth its salt.

I have yet to find imap inefficient.

Owa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlook_Web_Access) appears to be 
proprietary. I think proprietary protocols have no place almost 
anywhere, but especially not in email and related functionality. As is 
shown by this quote: "Some functions, such as Search, are not available 
in the Basic UI. Since there is no current IE installer available for 
Mac OS X and no official installer at all for Linux, Linux and many 
Apple users can only use restricted functionality."

My opinion remains that you need to separate functionality as opposed to 
integrate them. The latter will create unnecessary bloat and complexity. 
Plus a dependency on one single service.
