That is a matter of taste, I know a number of people who use it as their 
main client.

Yeah, as a plugin, works nice I am sure. You don't need an email server 
for that. I would say a dedicated protocol works much better.

No it sounds like a long history of mistreating email, one of the 
results you can see right here, aka spam. Spam is a prime example of 
what mistreating a protocol can lead to. In this case mainly a lax 
approach in the earlier years, something we're constantly paying the 
price for.
