Gentlemen:

This thread that has generated from a prior thread has been MOST
enlightening! Thank you ALL for your responses. Much appreciated!

Somehow the topic went on a tangent towards a "legal" issue about
contracts -- regardless, that too has been VERY enlightening. And yes, I'm
getting an iPhone .. probably the next generation :). Main reason is for
the Quad GSM capability, a huge storage capacity, MP3 Music to play when I
am in a flight, an organizer/scheduler for my appointments, Network
Capability, and the ability to install Open SSH to remote connect to my
dedicated servers and a SIP Client. (Yes, you CAN install 3rd party apps).

Most of you who know me in person, are aware that a lot (if not all) of
things I speak and talk about are based on real life experience vs. the
theoretical aspect. The theory however, I cannot emphasize how important it
is... to consider before I get things rolling at a practical level. My
philosophy is that in technology nothing is impossible... sure difficult...
but not impossible. My philosophy in life has also been: If there is a
problem, then there is a solution to it.

So here are some updates for those of you curious to know more or
considering an iPhone:

1. If you want an iPhone -- simply go to Buffalo to the Apple store if eBay
is not an option. You walk away buying an iPhone (without contract),
directly from Steve Jobs Apple store! No 3rd party store, no reseller, but
pure Apple Store. So if Apple themselves are selling the phone, then they
may be in breach of their own agreement. The fact is these corporate
agreements between Apple and AT&T are only for their eyes and seldom we get
to see the REAL picture.

Apple store does not make you sign a contract. You pay cash and you walk
away. No gray market, No black market... just pure Apple store....
directly from Apple.

2. My sister is almost computer illiterate. Took her no time to unlock it.
Another source's relatives (in Canada) got an iPhone -- and this has been
unlocked in less than 30 minutes by someone who is also not a technie.

3. I've confirmed with a number of iPhone users... that they **HAVE**
been able to install 3rd party apps. No Problem!

4. For firmware version 1.0.2, installing 3rd party apps was no problem...
and for firmware version 1.1.1, the code has been cracked 3 days ago -- so
you have NO PROBLEM installing 3rd party apps on 1.1.1 either.

5. Two users I know first hand, right here in the Asterisk community -- has
OpenSSH, and numerous 3rd party apps on the iPhone.

6. Another friend & iPhone user has written to me directly: " I think they
make great product, but they aren't very open and I always tell people to
buy something else (especially in the mp3/iPod category). Also, I work
selling Microsoft product for a living. So people are shocked when I tell
them I have an iPhone. I am the last person they would expect to have one -
but the device is just brilliant - not perfect, but pretty close! "

Moral of the story: The collective people power and the collective
resources of human intelligence across the globe, beats the collective
intelligence of all corporations & their staff combined together! This is
yet another proof, that no matter how hard you try to lock down the common
people into contracts (slavery IMHO), they will find a way to be free.

Last but not least... there is no substitute to practical experience, vs.
reading articles written by other people who had little success in what ever
they were trying to do.

All the best and thank you all... this has been truly enlightening and I've
got back from all of you as a community more than what I was looking for.
Also special thanks to few of you who wrote to me off list sharing your
positive experience with the iPhone that came unlocked.

Cheers!
Reza.
