Henry,

Yes, that was my theory for having both with a load balancing router. But in 5 years I've only had my cable out for maybe 30 hours, an even though it is DHCP, my IP only changes about once every 6 months. The DSL was nothing but a headache, poor customer support ( and yes Rogers is no better ), IP changes anywhere from every few hours to longest of about a week. But when it changes every few hours it also drops all traffic that was in progress, which was the real deal breaker for me.

My neighbour has DSL and I have a strong WiFI connection to his network that in the odd case if the cable goes down, I can just change my gateway IP and utilize the network bridge.

G726, I've not played with lately, since I really don't need the extra headroom on the bandwidth. But should give it another look some time soon.

Mike, have you tried G726 ?
According to the pundits it has pretty good quality
at around half the bandwidth, and uses much less CPU than G723 etc.
It would be nice to get as many channels as a T1 for $50 a pop ! :)

Anyway there is a case for having both DSL and Cable which is
that it's not unusual for either DSL or Cable to go down but it would be very
unusual
for both to go down at the same time.

I have both ADSL & Cable (Express not Extreme ) here. I have had many
issues with Bell DSL for voip and almost no issues with Rogers. And with
the added hassles of pppoe, the IP constantly changing and the
connection resetting, So I just cancelled my DSL this month, not worth
the hassle.

I have as many as 4 concurrent G711 calls going and the only time I have
any issue is when a large upload process starts and it takes a few
seconds for the router to throttle the process.
