Apparently the concept of using off the shelf hardware vs. commercial hardware to achieve 30+ km, to interconnect villages and towns, is quite common in developing nations in Asia, Africa and South / Latin America.

Anything is possible with reasonable planning and thinking out of the box.

What's possible and what's practical are 2 entirely different things. Having had an amateur radio license for 40 years, I'm quite familiar with what some experimenters have done. But if this project is for business use, I'd look at more serious solutions, that take into consideration durability, lightning protection and more. I certainly would not try to jury rig consumer WiFi gear. In the developing world, cost and availability of equipment is a far greater factor than here.

There's a company called Hutton <http://www.hol4g.com/> that sells this sort of gear and they have an office in Mississauga. However, the equipment still has to be properly installed.
