It is a NeoWare E140 thin client (with 512MB flash disk module).
The disk module has proprietary data and power interfaces and hosting it 
elsewhere is non-trivial.
The usual way to load images onto these is via a bootable USB stick.

I am using USB to copy the Astlinux files from a USB stick. However this 
is not connected when I get these symptoms - and there is nothing else 
connected apart from a monitor and a keyboard.

I will boot it up again and leave it for a longer period to see if it 
sorts itself out
