David,
I've done both. Currently, I'm using the prebuilt kit, but getting a
patch for this problem will be a swift kick back to build-my-own. That,
and trying out that chan_misdn bit from yesterday.
I had seen the references to your patch, but thought that had to do with
channels staying open only.
Send me the patch and I will warm up the compiler.
Thanks !!

Do you build your own Astlinux from source, or take one of the
prebuild images? If you build your own I can give you a patch that
will work around the problem. Maybe not a long term solution, but it
will at least confirm the diagnosis. The problem is associated with
calling the System() command from within dialplan. It just happens
that asterisk-gui makes extensive use of this, hence why you run into
the problem so quickly when you bring up the asterisk-gui. My work
around is to enable an alternative way of kicking off a system command
and having the asterisk-gui use that.

I have also experienced the astlinux 0.6.3+ hang issue, and can
add the following notes:
- I run on net5501's
- I have 3 machines ::
"production" that is running rock-solid on a astlinux-1725
(pre 0.6) version. No problems
development box that I upgraded from vanilla 0.6 that
started getting the issue on 0.6.3
brand new customer box that I installed 0.6.3 and
immediately upgraded 0.6.5
- I also lose http.conf occasionally when I have to "pull the
plug". I've lost other edits as well, which may well be because of
no sync before pulling the plug.
- It is definitely related to the asterisk gui :: if I don't use
the gui, it never happens
- When the box "hangs", it loses everything :: console I/o, ssh
connections timeout, the standard asterisk https interface (p.k.a
"altweb") hangs, SIP connections timeout, . The *only* thing that
keeps running is the asterisk-gui. Bizarre.
- As far as I can tell it's not an resource issue. Plenty of
memory, CPU is not pegged, etc. not out of swap space.
- Technically the "hang" is not terminal. If you type something on
the console, at some indefinite time later (measured possibly in
hours), you will see it echo.. The recovery is brief... the next
things you type may appear again in another couple of hours.
- I'd like to pin it on the asterisk-gui, though thet fact that it
keeps running makes that a difficult position.
I can and do avoid the asterisk-gui. but unfortunately customer
*like* the GUI and it is difficult to un-tell them about it.
Tough problem to track and describe, much less identify and
remedy. Thoughts welcome.

Hi David,
Thank you for the info and link, looks like it seems to be an
Alix issue as I am using the Alix1c, one other thing I noticed is
that if you use the Asterisk GUI and setup a VSP Trunk, for some
reason you get a congestion error when you try to make a call,
but if you manually setup the VSP trunk all works well, this is
what I have done at present. Strange though I installed Debian +
Asterisk & Asterisk GUI on a small 2.5 HD and plugged it to the
Alix1C board, and all works perfectly, Asterisk GUI, putty etc.
Darrick has had a look at my setup as well, will await a solution.
Cheers
Cleve

Cleve,
This problem I also experienced in newer version of astlinux, but
David Kerr reported same issues at July 2008.

I avoid access to the Asterisk GUI.
And for a further diagnosis of my problem...

Bottom line, I have moved to pre 0.7 version of Astlinux that I
build myself from 'trunk'.
