If i am informed right and measured on my little experience you can hear
20kHz when you are 6 years old. When you are lucky you can hold it for a
while but at 36, 18kHz even would be very good.
And these are even optimistic values.
Now when you read around the net you´ll find many reports about all
ipod earplug users suddenly can hear up to 25khz and such!!??
I bet it nearly always is something related to the gear generating
these sounds that farts at another frequency most interprete as the 
real signal.
Generating and reproducing a clean sinus at these fequencys shouldn´t
be performed on soundcards that are related to any kind of resampling
like AC97 codecs or such do.
btw. i am 37 and can hear up to 18kHz (sinus) only per day fitness and
different on both ears. I start to get problems abxing missing or
artifacting above 16kHz in serious listening tests such as lame for
mp3.
