If i am informed right and measured on my little experience you can hear 20kHz when you are 6 years old. When you are lucky you can hold it for a while but at 36, 18kHz even would be very good. And these are even optimistic values. Now when you read around the net you´ll find many reports about all ipod earplug users suddenly can hear up to 25khz and such!!?? I bet it nearly always is something related to the gear generating these sounds that farts at another frequency most interprete as the real signal. Generating and reproducing a clean sinus at these fequencys shouldn´t be performed on soundcards that are related to any kind of resampling like AC97 codecs or such do. btw. i am 37 and can hear up to 18kHz (sinus) only per day fitness and different on both ears. I start to get problems abxing missing or artifacting above 16kHz in serious listening tests such as lame for mp3.
