Exactly - above 40/100 you will keep perfect digital resolution.

However, since you are feeding a lower signal into the DAC, the DAC's
signal-to-noise ratio will effectively be lower.

So for volumes between 40 and 100, the analog sound quality will still
decrease slightly(?) as the volume decreases, even though the digital
resolution is perfect.
