Spurred on by the cordial discussions in this thread, I thought I'd reconfigure one of my PSUs to make it suitable for powering a SB3.
The PSU is one secondary of a 12-0-12VAC 300VA thru a bridge rectifier. Filter is a CRC 10,000uF - 1ohm - 10,000uF, caps bypassed. Regulator is a LM396K (10amp TO3). Voltage set to 5.14V As this was a quick test, no attempt to lower noise or PSRR. Wiring is ordinary. I was expecting a BIG improvement over the standard PSU but in a rather informal test I think the BIG supply was marginally better. The difference was just enough to make me think building a proper sized PSU with attention to lowering noise, PSRR and proper wiring may be worthwhile.
