Spurred on by the cordial discussions in this thread, I thought I'd
reconfigure one of my PSUs to make it suitable for powering a SB3.

The PSU is one secondary of a 12-0-12VAC 300VA thru a bridge rectifier.
Filter is a CRC 10,000uF - 1ohm - 10,000uF, caps bypassed. Regulator is
a LM396K (10amp TO3). Voltage set to 5.14V As this was a quick test, no
attempt to lower noise or PSRR. Wiring is ordinary.

I was expecting a BIG improvement over the standard PSU but in a rather
informal test I think the BIG supply was marginally better. The
difference was just enough to make me think building a proper sized PSU
with attention to lowering noise, PSRR and proper wiring may be
worthwhile.
