Well Pat, you now got a mark that you are non tech for 2 reasons: 1) sm (single mode) is long wave laser and always supported the shortest patch-cables between two interfaces. The wave-length of the laser is so short that you can't make a cable too short for trouble. For short cables you choose low-powered laser-modules. 2) TOSLink is specified as mm (multimode) plastic fiber, --NOT-- sm and not glass, so your whole point is irrelevant. still, cheers!
