Regardless of the science, I've yet to hear any difference between expensive glass and really, really cheap plastic Toslink in 1m lengths (which is all I use these days). Also, I've heard some systems sound very slightly better/different with coax and some with Toslink. I've also yet to hear any change of any sort by using balanced AES/EBU vs coax/spdif with a wide range of studio gear...
